Permanent exhibition of Salla Museum tells about life in Salla from the 1900s to the 1960s. In addition to the permanent exhibition, you can visit the outdoor exhibition area, where traditional livelihoods and wartime are highlighted.

The museum’s permanent exhibition is divided into three parts.

LIFE IN THE OLD SALLA

The first section tells about the life and the livelihoods in Kuolajärvi at the beginning of the century. The times before World War II were quite troubled. There was always movements back and forth through the border. Especially years after Finland became independent were rich for such events as cross-border shipments, the pork mutiny and the establishment of Murmansk Legion.

WARS YEARS

The second part of the exhibition tells about wartime. The beginning of the Winter War changed life in Salla decisively. The war years were very heavy because of battles and evacuation. During the Continuation War, however, it was already possible to return to the former regions, but the Lapland War finally destroyed all the former. As a result of the wars, the area of Salla shrunk to half of the former.

RECONSTRUCTION

The third part of the exhibition focuses on reconstruction. The destroyed villages had to be rebuilt and new villages were replaced with villages behind the border. However, as a result of the hard work, Salla became one of the largest milk producers in the country in the 1960s. The time travel ends at that golden age of Salla’s agriculture.
